Abstract:

Abstract

Background: Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) show promise for modulating inflammatory processes, with emerging evidence suggesting endocannabinoid system (ECS) involvement as a potential mechanism.

Objective: To map the literature exploring relationships between mindfulness practice, inflammatory biomarkers, and ECS modulation.

Methods: Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, we searched five databases from inception to December 2023 for studies examining mindfulness interventions with inflammatory/ECS biomarkers.

Results: Of 1,842 identified records, 34 studies met inclusion criteria. Findings revealed: (1) consistent mindfulness-related inflammatory reductions; (2) preliminary ECS modulation evidence; (3) limited direct mindfulness-ECS-inflammation examination; (4) methodological heterogeneity; and (5) proposed neuro-immune-ECS pathways.

Conclusion: Evidence suggests potential synergistic relationships between mindfulness, inflammation reduction, and ECS modulation, though direct mechanistic evidence remains limited.
