Abstract:

As digital communication increasingly shapes romantic relationships, emojis have emerged as essential tools for expressing affection, empathy, and emotional nuance. This quantitative study investigates how emoji use influences emotional intimacy among couples in committed relationships. A sample of 314 participants aged 18-40 completed validated questionnaires measuring emotional intimacy and digital communication behaviors, including emoji frequency, purpose, and emotional alignment.
Findings revealed a significant positive correlation (r = .64, p< .001) between frequent, emotionally congruent emoji use and higher emotional intimacy scores. Regression analysis indicated that emoji use accounted for 41% of the variance in emotional intimacy (R² = .41). Participants who reported using emojis to express affection, humor, and support experienced greater closeness and understanding in their relationships. Notably, the use of emojis for conflict mitigation and emotional reassurance was associated with higher scores on relational harmony.
These findings suggest that emojis are not just decorative symbols but play a substantive role in maintaining emotional connection in digital-age relationships. This study highlights the evolving nature of emotional intimacy and the value of digital language in modern romantic dynamics, offering insights for therapists, researchers, and couples seeking to strengthen their emotional bonds through intentional digital communication.
